How can I help manage my mom and dad's medical care?

There are several ways you can help your parents navigate their medical care:

Research and prepare: Research their medical condition and treatment options and prepare a list of questions to ask their healthcare providers.

Accompany them to appointments: Attend their medical appointments with them and take notes on important information discussed during the appointment.

Be a liaison: Be a liaison between your parents and their healthcare providers and help them communicate their needs and concerns to their healthcare team.

Help them understand their treatment: Help your parents understand their treatment plan, medication regimen, and any instructions they need to follow.

Help them with logistics and coordination: Help your parents with scheduling appointments, filling out medical forms, and coordinating care with other healthcare providers.

Provide emotional support: Provide emotional support to your parents during this difficult time and help them cope with the stress and uncertainty of their medical condition.

Keep a record of their medical history, treatment and medication history, and insurance information in one place, and make sure it’s updated regularly.

Get a patient advocate if possible: If your parents have complex conditions or you are unable to help them navigate the healthcare system due to any reason, consider hiring a professional patient advocate to help them.

Why should I use a patient advocate

When dealing with complex or even simple medical issues, having a trusted resource who can gather information and ask difficult questions is essential.  An impartial patient advocate can help you prepare for and navigate the complex healthcare system, as well as be there for you every step of the way.
